About Functional Medicine
The future of medicine is here, and it is an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach to addressing the underlying causes of disease.
Through personalized lab work such as; blood, stool, urine, saliva, and hair, Functional Medicine (also referred to as Regenerative Medicine) allows patients and practitioners to work together to promote optimal wellness by connecting the dots from the past and present. Connecting these dots allows us to understand why and how we got to the state of health the body is in today. Through our detailed understanding of each patient’s genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors, this information enables us to create a personalized treatment plan that will lead to improved patient outcomes.
Understanding the root cause, rather than just treating the symptoms, allows us to see the whole complexity of a disease state. At times it might be one condition that has many different causes. At other times we may find that one cause may result in many different conditions.
Functional Medicine is your pathway to health, well-being, and longevity.

How Functional Medicine Works
Functional Medicine Frequently Asked Questions
What is Functional Medicine?
Functional medicine (also known as Regenerative Medicine) is a specialty within integrative medicine that focuses on the interaction of genes, environment, and lifestyle factors to determine the underlying causes of illness or disease. This might require several rounds of conversations as well as in-depth testing with your doctor to determine the cause of an illness and to find the best treatment option.
How do I know if functional medicine is right for me?
Functional medicine provides a patient-centered approach to treating and managing chronic diseases. In functional medicine, we aim to find the root causes of complex illnesses. We look into the various factors that cause a condition while we seek to eliminate the root cause of your major symptoms.
We will examine all factors affecting your health, including:
Diet and nutrition
Hormonal changes
Over-the-counter and prescription drugs use
Lifestyle
Organ function
With the information you provide, we can get to the root cause of your illness and customize treatment options and a lifestyle plan for you.
Functional Medicine is for you if you;
Want to take a holistic approach to your health care.
Have a complex medical condition and haven’t found relief through a conventional approach.
Prefer to avoid taking prescription medications or medications don’t seem to work well for you.
What services are provided with Functional Medicine?
You’ll receive the same services as you would from a conventionally trained primary care physician or a specialist. The difference is your treatment plan will be customized with lifestyle changes, such as supplements, exercise plans and a focus on longevity or the health span of your life. You’ll also receive a comprehensive education in areas that can help you live a healthier day-to-day life, such as nutrition, sleep, and stress management.
What should I expect from my functional medicine consultation?
You can expect an in-depth history intake, 3D body scan, and a physical exam. We will discuss lifestyle choices, including nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress, relationships, spirituality, and critical life events. This information will help your provider develop a personalized treatment plan for your care.
How long are the consultations?
Initial new patient consultations are 90 minutes and include an in-depth history intake, 3D body scan, and physical exam. Initial follow-up lab consultations will also be 90 minutes and include going over all the lab results and creating a clear, individualized treatment plan. Existing client follow-up consultations can be scheduled for 30 - 45 minutes. Follow-up ongoing care appointments are also available via Zoom.
What other integrative services do you offer?
We provide a variety of integrative services you can access on your own or that might be recommended as part of your personalized treatment plan. Choose from chiropractic care, massage therapy, acupuncture, and integrative health coaching.
Where can I get nutritional supplements?
If your treatment plan includes taking supplements, those are available online through a full script (an email will be sent directly to you with your prescription) or at our office.
What type of lab tests will I need?
Almost all lab tests are covered by insurance, subject to any deductible or copay. If cost is a concern, we can provide you with a list of common labs so you can check with your insurance about coverage. Some outside labs don’t bill insurance; in this case, the expense is paid out-of-pocket.
About Functional Medicine Labs
Functional lab tests provide valuable insights into a patient’s condition, enabling the practitioner to take the necessary steps to initiate the healing process. These labs, specifically, help practitioners dig deeper, get a more thorough look at the complexity of the body and connect the dots with what is happening in the whole person. Functional labs allow the patient to truly begin to understand WHY they feel the way they do.
Conventional medicine typically focuses on just one aspect of that journey. The testing is narrow in scope and focuses on a specific symptom, so any treatment plan lacks the complete data necessary for a holistic approach to healing. In fact, many patients are told that their labs are "within normal range," yet they still experience symptoms. Even on routine blood work, functional medicine practitioners evaluate results in a narrower range known as the optimal range to catch certain markers early on. This way of practicing allows practitioners to reverse or stop disease progression altogether.
Functional medicine practitioners utilize functional lab tests in conjunction with patient history and symptom assessments to comprehensively evaluate imbalances within the body’s systems.

About Supplements
Vitamins and minerals are essential for just about everything your body needs to do on a day-to-day basis.
A nutrient-dense, varied diet can deliver most of the vitamins and minerals your body needs to function properly. Unfortunately, our diets are not nutrient-dense everyday, stress increases inflammation, we may have some genetic mutations that alter how our body works, and that’s where a daily vitamin and mineral supplement can help.
At Awaken Now we use practitioner brands only as they are respected by physicians and healthcare practitioners because of the clinical research that has been conducted, and the quality, purity, and effectiveness of the ingredients.
