Acupuncture Frequently Asked Questions

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is extremely safe! We only use one-time needles. While acupuncture usually does not hurt, after a treatment, it is possible to have minor soreness or bruising at the needle sites.

How deep do the needles go?

The needle depth varies depending on location and what is being treated. Generally, the needles are inserted approximately ¼- to ½-inch deep but might go much deeper depending on the body part.

Is there anything to avoid before and after acupuncture treatment?

Avoid caffeine, alcohol and drugs (recreational) before receiving acupuncture. Cold showers and baths are not recommended for 24 hours after the treatment, but in general, on the day of acupuncture treatment, it is best to rest and allow the body to continue the healing the treatment provided.

Does acupuncture treatment hurt?

Mostly acupuncture does not hurt. There may be a dull or a sharp sensation at the time of insertion in some points, but once the needles are in most patients go to sleep. Women will often be more sensitive right before their cycles.

Do acupuncture needles have medicine in them?

Needles used for acupuncture are typically stainless-steel, disposable needles that do not have medicine in them. They are hair thin; much thinner than hypodermic needles used for injections.

How long does the treatment take?

An initial visit for acupuncture includes a consultation and a treatment, this will usually take between 60-75 minutes. Subsequent visits are 60 minutes long. Acupuncture needles are left in place for 40 minutes for best results. Cupping and electro-acupuncture will be included in the session if the practitioner sees fit and is included in the price. Herbal Medicine is provided at an additional cost.

Can you treat more than one condition at a time?

In Chinese Medicine we look at the body as a whole and if one part is out, often it is because a number of things are going on. Therefore, multiple conditions are addressed at the same time

Are there different styles of acupuncture? If so, which style do you perform?

There are many different styles of acupuncture. I studied and currently practice Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM is the most common style and all acupuncture styles have TCM as their foundation. I also incorporate auricular (ear) and scalp therapy in my treatments, as well as Master Tung points and sometimes Japanese style for sensitive patients.

How many sessions do you recommend?

Everyone responds to acupuncture differently, but the majority of people will experience results in one to three treatments. As a general rule, chronic conditions will take longer to see full results. With acute conditions you may only need a couple of sessions but with chronic conditions you may need a number of sessions close together and as the patient starts feeling better we start spacing the sessions out, ultimately getting to a goal of maintenance, which would be one or twice per month.

HEALING YOUR GUT WITH ACUPUNCTURE

electro-ACUPUNCTURE

About Electro-Acupuncture

Electro-acupuncture (EA) is the application of a pulsating electrical current through acupuncture needles as a means of stimulating the acupoints. The procedure for EA is to insert the acupuncture needle as you would normally and then attach an electrode to the needle to provide continued stimulation. Cells, tissue and essentially the entire system will be influenced by the electrical currents. Most electrotherapy techniques are transcutaneous, this means that the electricity will only flow superficially over the skin, EA directs the current with pinpoint precision. During EA there may be tingling or mild involuntary muscle twitches, these are normal, temporary effects of the electricity entering the body. In clinical studies, EA has shown to be effective in treating a variety of conditions, particularly those that are chronic.

Benefits of Electro-Acupuncture

Reduces pain, muscle spasms and neurological issues.

Decreases hypertension

Relieves nausea

Helps assure that the patient gets the amount of stimulation needed to increase sensation in patient suffering from numbness.

Can produce a stronger stimulation without causing tissue damage associated with twirling and lifting and thrusting the needle. Strong stimulation may be needed for difficult cases of neuralgia or paralysis.

Easier to control the frequency of the stimulus and the amount of stimulus than with hand manipulation of the needles.

Cupping

IMG_3732.JPG

About Cupping

Cupping is a therapy in which cups are placed on the skin after suction is created. Cupping therapy uses the suction of the cups to increase circulation and thereby to promote the healing of a broad range of ailments. Suction is created by placing a glass cup over a small flame and the quickly placing the cup on the skin, no flames ever touch the skin. The two most common methods of cupping are "fixed cupping" and "moving cupping."

Types of Cupping

Fixed Cupping:  Is when the cups are placed on a certain area of the body and left in place for 5-10 minutes.

Moving Cupping:  Is where massage oil or cream is applied on the skin where cupping will be performed, the cups are then placed over the same area and the practitioner slides them around that region of the body — most commonly the back.

Cupping Frequently Asked Questions

What are the different types of cupping?

  • Stationary cupping -  Cups are placed on a certain area of the body and left in place for 5-10 minutes.

  • Moving cupping -  Massage oil or cream is applied on the skin where cupping will be performed, the cups are then placed over certain areas of the body, and the practitioner slides them around.

  • Bleeding Cupping -  Is done in combination with stationary cupping to remove toxins directly from the body rather than letting the toxins drain out through the stool, urine or sweat. A lancet in a specific pen is used to prick the top layer of skin to allow toxic blood to be released once suction is applied. There is no scarring and minimal pain.

  • Popping cupping - Is usually done on the abdomen to stop diarrhea or alleviate constipation. The cups are placed on and taken off just as fast along the intestinal tract in a rhythmic motion for 3-5 min

How long does it take to heal?

Cupping may leave bruising, this bruising will often be worse in the area where there is most pain or toxin build-up. The time span is dependent on a few things; your skin type, your general health, your pain level, your daily toxin exposure and how strongly the cups were placed on your body. We advise you not to consume any red meats, dairy products, junk food, and alcohol and to avoid any toxic chemicals such as cigarettes and narcotics for a brief period of 24 hours post-treatment. You are also discouraged from taking any cold baths, using ice or being exposed to the wind as your pores are open, and allowing the cold to enter may prevent the full results from being applied. In general the time to fully heal ranges from approximately 5 days to about 14 days.

Will I scar?

There is no scarring, only bruising after any of the cupping sessions

Can I operate heavy vehicles or carry on with normal activity after treatment?

In general you can continue with life and daily routine as normal. If you feel more fatigued after a session make sure you keep up with your water intake to allow for the toxins to get out of your body as quick as possible.

How often should I have it done?

It would a case-by-case recommendation depending on what is going on in each patient’s body. Your practitioner will be able to advise you at each session.

What should I do in preparation for any Cupping procedure?

It would be wise to have a good nutritious meal about 3 hours before treatment, and don't forget to hydrate before and after the treatment.

Can you combine cupping with other treatments?

In Chinese Medicine, we look at the body as a whole and if one part is out, often it is because a number of things are going on. Therefore, multiple conditions are addressed at the same time, and cupping can be combined with services like acupuncture, our hyperbaric oxygen chamber, massage, red light therapy, infrared sauna, and more. We can discuss the best course of action in combining treatments during your next visit to Awaken Now.

Are there any self-care recommendations post-treatment?

In order to ensure a speedy recovery, we recommend the following:

  • Eat a healthy and well-balanced meal. Artificial foods, preservatives, and other chemicals will undo the detox benefits achieved by cupping.

  • Keep hydrated

  • Take a breath and relax, allow your body to heal itself so it would be best to avoid any physical or emotional stress.

How much does cupping cost?

Cupping is $60 and can be done on it’s own or added to another treatment like a massage or acupuncture session.
